The Perfect Winter Morning

The past two weeks have been incredibly cold in Upstate New York. Temperatures are rarely above 15, and that's before windchill, and I can't remember the last time I saw the sun. If you're from the Northeast or have ever visited in the winter, you know that sunshine is pretty rare and the most you can usually hope for is a bright day as the sun bounces off of snowflakes. That's one of the reasons why I loved our brunch at The Blue Hen so much! The airy conservatory is so bright, it almost felt like a summer day instead of a blustery -7 degree morning, and the Parisian inspired decor was a visual treat and so unique for the area!

Pasty Basket - especially loved the Pepper Biscuit!

The Adelphi Hotel opened up this past fall and I had been eager to visit, but just had not found the time. I usually do an extended family visit to the Saratoga Springs area around Christmas, so I was certain I'd get to visit the hotel and grab brunch in one of their new restaurants, The Blue Hen, while I was there. My first plans were scrapped when James came down with a 104° fever right before Christmas. Obviously no one was going anywhere for a while. But a couple days after, my husband and I were able to meet up with my brother for an early breakfast. The restaurant is great because it offers a full breakfast 7 days a week! In other words, you can totally get brunch on a weekday, which I absolutely love. Although late risers beware, because I think it closes around 11am. Having a toddler, getting up early is not an issue for us, ha! We had an amazing breakfast and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal. The waitstaff was also quite attentive.

Pro Tip: Specialty coffees and breakfast cocktails are not on the menu but are offered - all you need do is ask.

And for those asking about the Adelphi remodel - I have to say, both we were all highly impressed. While a departure from the original Adelphi, which had a Victorian bed and breakfast feel to the hotel, with a mix of antiques and quirky layout, the remodeled Adelphi is stunningly sophisticated. It has a very high-end art deco feel to it, and, as I mentioned, The Blue Hen's inlaid floor, blue velvet seats, mirrored walls and caned furniture reminds me of a cafe in Paris. There is lots of marble, velvet, and woodwork throughout the hotel. It seems both luxurious and relaxing, and Tony has suggested we book a night there the next time we are in town.
