K-Beauty with the Atopalm Real Barrier Collection

My skin has been going through a phase where it has been extremely dry, sensitive, flake and slow to heal. Likely a combination of this horrid weather and the fact that I've been using azealic acid and trentinoin (Retin-A) nightly. My current toner burned when I applied it and I was starting to run out of products and hadn't had a chance to replace them yet, so I decided to see what I had in my stash of products that Tony had brought back from Busan for me. My stash included quite a few products from a company called Atopalm, which I had never heard of before, as it is not really mentioned on any of the American Korean/Asian Beauty blogs. I also had not heard it mentioned on the Asian Beauty Reddit, so I really knew nothing about it when I first tried it.

I was looking for a new toner when I saw the Essence Mist in my stash, noticed that it highlighted the fact that it had ceramides as an active ingredient, and I figured I'd give it a try. I had never used a mist before, and I was pleasantly surprised. It instantly soothed my face and I have been using either immediately after washing or after I use my prescription actives. There is no burning with application and it instantly makes my skin soft and smooth. I also decided to give one of the creams a try. I have had a few options but, considering the state of my face, I decided to go with one called "Real Barrier Extreme Cream." Basically I figured I needed all the help I could get. It was extremely thick and I applied it as my final step in my routine and headed off to bed.

As I was waiting for it to sink in to my skin, I decided to look into the company a bit more through my good friend, Mr. Google. I was surprised to find out it has been one of the #1 skincare brands in Korea for about a decade. I'm chalking this up to the fact that it is pretty no frills and its targets towards a medical-level treatment of the skin. In fact, the founder is a Doctor who developed the line for his son who had a number of skin problems and there have even been scientific articles published about its efficacy as a moisturizer. Being a scientist, this definitely appealed to me! Seriously, if you go to the Amazon page for the Real Barrier Extreme Cream, they provide a list of references at the end of the description!

I have to say, the next morning I was shocked! My face looked normal again. All the dry, red patches were smoothed over. The pigmentation from pimples and scratches that refused to heal were considerably less red. Within a few days, that had all but disappeared. I have to say, this brand makes some of my most favorite K-beauty products that I've ever tried. According to the company, the key is their patented MLE skin barrier complex and a combination of other fantastic ingredients including: ceramides, squalene, hyaluronic acid, etc. If I had to draw a comparison to American brands you may be familiar with, I think it's along the same lines as CeraVe, in that it is formulated for people with highly sensitive skin, is extremely effective and is in a similar price range.

How I'm Using It: I've been using the Essence Mist in the morning after washing my face and before my Benton Snail Bee High Content Essence and then again at night after my prescription creams. I've been using the Real Barrier Extreme Cream as the last step in my night time routine.

TLDR; I've never heard of this brand before, but it's apparently pretty well known in Korea. It's designed for people with really sensitive skin and atopic eczema. I LOVED all the products I've tried so far. They've been amazing for red, dry skin that has trouble healing. I saw a difference over night. Definitely a convert and definitely going to continue to try more products from this company. Also it's super affordable.

Side Note: From my research I've gathered that the Real Barrier and the Intensive line are similar, but the Real Barrier line is designed and marketed more as a complete skincare line and the Intensive cream is more as a medicinal cream.
