That Time I Couldn't Stop Talking About My Deodorant

I never thought I would say it, but I've found an all natural deodorant that actually works! I've used quite a few natural deodorants before, and while they're somewhat effective...they've never really stood up to my relatively active lifestyle. If I showered at night and applied before bed, I'd often wake up with a little funk and without question, I'd definitely smell body odor at the end of a long day. However, I've been totally blown away by my experience with Native and I have fully fallen down the rabbit hole. At this point I've got a full size stick of their Limited Edition Rosé, mini bars of Coconut & Vanilla and Citrus Musk, and mini bars of Cotton & Lilly and Lavender & Rose on the way.

Why a Natural Deodorant
Over the winter I was visiting my parents and forgot to bring deodorant! My mother had switched over to Native the year before, and she gave me a mini bar (Citrus and Herbal Musk) that she had on gotten with one of her orders. I used it a couple times, then returned home and never really thought much of it until recently. For the last seven months or so, I've had tenderness and swelling in my axilla/armpit area for no obvious reason (with a family history of breast cancer I did take the precaution of getting an ultrasound, which came back totally normal). So, with this in mind, I decided to forgo my regular antiperspirant and see if letting my armpits "breathe" a bit helped. At first I wore nothing, which just wasn't practical considering the summer weather. Then I remembered the stick of Native my mother had given me, looked into the ingredients, saw that it was not an antiperspirant and wouldn't clog my pores, and decided to give it a try.

My Experience
To date, this is the most effective natural deodorant I've ever tried. On a regular day, all I smell are occasional whiffs of whatever scent I'm wearing that day - it's quite pleasant because I am a huge fan of all the scents I've tried so far. After a run, there is no body odor scent. Truly. Even after a full, long day of yard work in 90 degrees weather, when I am literally dripping sweat, I can hardly smell anything. SO yes, you're going to sweat. It is NOT an antiperspirant. It is simply a deodorant. So if you are all about dry armpits, may not be the best every day choice because I do find I still get underarm dampness. After two weeks of using the Citrus & Herbal Musk, which is actually one of their men's scents, I was a true convert and I decided to order a full size stick, as well as some travel sized bars in other scents.

Some Questions I've Been Asked
Do you have to "detox"? Honestly, I didn't even know what this meant, so for me the answer is no. I've since learned that some people need a week or two to adjust to this new deodorant formula. This was not an issue for me an I found it to be immediately effective.

What's the texture like? I've found that it is a tiny bit rough, but not really gritty. I would describe it as chalky, likely because of the large amount of baking soda in the recipe. It does not have the silicon-slick feel of most commercial antiperspirants, but otherwise is comparable.

Do you need to hold it against your skin before applying it? I have no trouble running it smoothly across my armpits after shaving and I do not need to warm it up to apply it. I apply 2-3 swipes. It does leave a little residue at first that brushes away, but I have not found it to leave any marks on my clothes, nor does it leave my skin feeling wet, sticky, or tacky.

What's my favorite scent? So far I really love the Citrus & Herbal Musk, and if you're someone who likes unisex or more masculine scents, I think it is a great option. Honestly, I don't find it to be that much citrus or musk, and to me it's more of a sea salt/ocean scent. Out of the women's scents I've tried so far, I prefer the more fruity scent of the  Rosé over the sweet scent of the Coconut & Vanilla (their most popular woman's scent). I have two more scents on the way that I'm excited to try!

How long does a stick last? Honestly, I'm not sure. Native offers a subscription service (you set the time interval), and I can't imagine going through a stick before 2-3 months. My original mini deodorant has lasted me for more than two weeks at this point.

So there it is! I never thought I'd be a connoisseur of deodorant, yet here I am! If you are thinking about trying out Native but aren't sure what scent to get, they do have sampler packs that I think are pretty reasonably priced ($24-30), plus everything is free shipping (even single sticks)! I am so tempted to get the summer sampler pack because all the scents sound so good.
