Dissertation Framework

September 18, 2008

So I’ve determined how I’m going to frame my pirate research in order to ground i in STS: What role have pirates played in the development of science and technology?

Potential areas of research:

Network Theory:
Who are pirates and what do they know? How is it that they know what they know? Did they share their knowledge with one another? Did they share their knowledge with those outside of the pirate community? This might also be an area in which to include aspects of political organization, i.e. contrasting or explaining the “capitalist” pirate with the “anarchist” pirate and how that might have impacted decision making.

Alternative Technology Use/Appropriation of Technology: Tying in with Network Theory, where did pirates obtain their ships and navigational equipment? Are they using technology intended for its original purpose - in many cases no, they were converting mercantile vessels to men of war, which knowledge and tools and resources were necessary for this? Were any of the changes made by pirates significant enough and did they have lasting contributions to the maritime world?

Colonialism/Postcolonial Studies: Pirates reached their height during the Golden Age of Piracy (1650s to 1720s) which also coincided with the height colonialism (I think?). What role did pirates play in colonialism? Did they make any contributions to colonialist powers, i.e. sharing information with political powers, the relationship of privateering. Can piracy be situated in Science is Multicultural by Sandra Harding or Science and Technology in a Multicultural World by David Hess. Who builds pirate ships? How does access to technology (pirate ships) impact economies/societies:
Economics of STS

  • The difference between religious pirate ports and anarchistic Caribbean pirate ports
  • The impact of piracy on trade
  • Stratification of economy/society

Any suggestions or comments? I would love any book recommendations so I can start on my literary review.

Super Fun Exercise

July 13, 2008

Last week I got a rebounder…which is really a semi fancy way of saying a mini trampoline made to be used indoors. Since I spent last week in San Diego I haven’t really been able to use it much, but the little time I have spent on it has convinced me it is the most fun workout ever. I always seem to have a difficult time driving to the gym and it’s not always nice enough to run outside, to the rebounder is the perfect solution! You can set it up in your living room, put on some music videos, a movie or a television show, or one of the many workout videos specifically available for rebounders. There also happens to be a number of rebounders to choose from - I have the non-folding jump4health rebounder in blue. After some finagling it just fits into my trunk (I have a civic), so if you want to take it along with you, I’d recommend one of the folding trampolines.

I admit it, I don’t look this ripped yet…someday? Except I’ll hopefully still have my boobs.

Oh, I would also like to point out that I actually was a bit sore the day afterwards - something I view as very promising! You can do all sorts of things to make your workout more difficult, like ankle or arm weights, and like I said - the best part is that you can do it in the privacy of your own living room or backyard.

The Magical Forests of New Zealand

June 3, 2008

It’s pretty obvious as to why they filmed Lord of the Rings in New Zealand.

Waterfalls are so pretty, but I find they rarely photograph well. Or at least that’s the case for us non-professionals.

I love this photo…although it’s going to need some editing to take out the water marks, as the flash reflected off the rain drops.

New Englanders in KiwiLand

June 1, 2008

Oh dear, it’s been ages since I wrote! Well half the problem is that I’m now on the South Island and the places we’ve been at have either had spotty internet or just no internet at all. For Shame New Zealand! My time in NZ is coming to an end: I’ve been here one month and I have one week left. Here are a few things that have left me totally shocked…or at least really surprised:

  • People here walk around barefoot…everywhere. You can go shopping, you can go into Starbucks, you can walk down the street or go to a cafe. I am blown away by this. Apparently they’ve never heard of No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service.
  • They really hate possums. Apparently the are an invasive species brought over from Australia and are totally destroying the forests. They also really like to make clothing from possums. If you see a possum in the road, it is your civic duty to run it over.
  • They farm deer! This is one I cannot get over. Pretty much the only time I’ve ever seen a deer at home is when its standing in the road stunned by the light and about to get run over. Or maybe nibbling grass on the side of the road. Or something like that. Here they have no wild deer and huge deer farms…and the deer run up to great you if you go over to the fence. It’s really really weird.
  • I totally have no idea what they are saying half the time. Also they make fun of the way I say nutella (I say new-tella, they say nut-ella). They call a cooler a chilly bin and a comforter a duvet and have no idea what a hamper or laundry basket are. Pen is pronounced as pin and pasta as paster.
  • Most restaurants don’t give you bills, you just get up and go to a cash register to pay. Even the really nice ones. This is the greatest thing ever because they pretty much expect everyone to be paying separately! They easily and happily split your bill as many ways as you’d like.
  • They think 45 degrees is REALLY cold. Hahaha!

I’m sure there are a lot of other hilarious differences between our two countries, but as a “new englander” - and I say that in quotes because I’m from New York and so technically I’m not really a new englander, as I’m sure someone from Maine or Connecticut will point out, there are the differences that stand out and are most entertaining to me.

I promise to be more diligent in my picture posting in the future!

Waiheke Island

May 18, 2008

Julia and I spent the weekend staying with a friend of a friend type person on Waiheke Island, which is about an hour ferry ride off the coast of Auckland. From what I gather, there’s a contingent of year round locals, but most of the multi million dollar homes are seasonal. The island has a very temperate climate, much like the Mediterranean, and makes a great place for growing olives and grapes, and there are several vineyards on the island. Along with a lot of sheep.

Behold the Lord of New Zealand!

We also came across this super cute little guy (a lil hedgehoge) walking along the road. We were all concerned he was going to get squished by a car so we tried to herd him off the road, but he just rolled up into a little ball and wouldn’t budge. After about 10 minutes though he meandered back in the the bush.

Being all tiny and what not

Sheep aside, Waiheke Island really is beautiful. It’s probably one of the few places that could tempt me to move to the other side of the world. But, unfortunately, it’s somewhat isolated and as I said before, unless you colud work on the island (which as a very small population of about 7,000), then you’d need to commute by ferry - very time consuming and pricey. If you are visiting the island I recommend you bring your car, because there are many vineyards and bays to visit and most of them involve winding mountainous roads that aren’t really conducive to bike riding, unless your Lance Armstrong. There is also a bus system, but it doesn’t extend beyond the little towns really.

Bay of Islands

May 14, 2008

Today Julia and I went sailing on the Gungha II through the Bay of Islands. I highly recommend using the same trip that we did. The captain, Mike, is a very friendly Canadian who gave us all a lesson in sailing, created tasty meals, and made each person an individual piece of jewelry from the shells we collected on an island he took us to. Clearly a man of many trades! The boat was fantastic, and had 2 bathrooms and freshwater showers, although none of us went swimming since it was a bit chilly out.

While out we saw penguins, various birds, sheep and dolphins (bottlenose to be exact). We also saw a hole in a rock, but not THE hole in the rock. Really, I think holes in rocks are overrated, much like Godiva chocolate.

look at this cute little penguin!

The dolphins were huge, and they were also quite dark.I was expecting a light gray, like at Sea World, but they were much more charcoal colored.

The dolphins were in the midst of mating…needless to say some inappropriate things were witnessed, and overall the dolphins were much more interested in…other things, than in us.

A view of the bay from the island we sailed to. We did a bit of exploring, we mainly found sheep poop.

A hole in A rock. But it still looked cool. It would probably be even cooler to kayak through.

I’m Alive!

May 13, 2008

I’m so sorry not to update. I made to to New Zealand safe and sound and Julia and I have been touring around Auckland and Northland. We’ve been rather busy and internet has been spotty too boot. Can you believe they want $5 for 50 minutes of internet here? How absurd!

Taken from the road on the drive to Paihia

We’ve been quite busy. Some of the places we’ve seen are: Auckland, Mt. Eden, 90 Mile Beach, the Kouri Forest, Paihia (and I don’t have Julia here now to tell me if I spelled that right), and many others. Hopefully the internet will cooperate with me so that I can post some pictures! I haven’t had time to resize them, so they might take some time to load. Tomorrow we are taking a yacht through the Bay of Islands. The weather has been wonderful and hopefully tomorrow will be great as well.

Mt. Eden, Auckland: that green bowl is an extinct volcano crater

So far I’ve determined New Zealand to be ridiculously expensive. The other day I saw a pair of Adidas sneakers for $189! This is incredible since they would maybe be $90 or $100 in the US. T-shirts are $65 and dresses are all over $100. I’m not sure how anyone can actually afford to buy clothing here! Food and any type of entertainment is also quite expensive. I feel as though I’ve spent vast sums of money already, which is rather unsafe since I still have 4 weeks to go!

My Hippie Hat

May 6, 2008

I made a hippie hat! I didn’t like it at first, but it’s really grown on me. The back is also kind of cute, but I’m not flexible enough to get a photo of it. It’s made from recycled sari fabric and green and blue wool yarn and is pretty.

(I think my profile is funny, especially my nose)

So there it is, my hat. From what I hear, it will probably come in handy in NZ. Another added bonus to the hippie hat is that it accommodates pony tails.

What’s In My Makeup Bag???

May 3, 2008

Maryam from My Marrakesh (whose blog I love, by the way) asked what some of my favorite beauty products are. I divide my favorite cosmetics into two categories: The stuff I carry around and don’t leave my house without, and the products that I love for photoshoots. Over the past year or two I’ve really cut down on my everyday makeup. I’m pretty sure this is a product of having to wear a full face of makeup everyday for work. I also tend to go through phases: I’ll wear the same blush for a month or a season, or the same eyeshadow every time I go out, etc. This is what’s in my bag right now:

1. Benefit Benetint: Be very wary of Benetint. It is not made for everyone. It’s main selling point is that you can use it for a blush and lip stain. But beware - it is a bright pink color…I like bright pink, so I’m okay with this. However, most people don’t like to look like a doll so, for the third time, I suggest extreme caution.

2. MAC Mineralized Skinfinish Natural: I have pretty nice skin, thanks to Dr. Pattison, my miracle working dermatologist. However, blush looks kind of poo on bare skin so I use the skinfinish to give myself a little bit of a base, a little sheen, and a little bit of color. It gives kind of a glowing smooth finish to your skin.

3. MAC Powder Blush: Powder tends to stay on longer than cremes so that’s what I generally use. Also, it should be mentioned that I am a blush whore. Without blush I look like a corpse. I usually carry several shades of blush with me…although they’re all some degree of pink it seems My favorite colors are Foolish Me (which was foolishly discontinued), Fleur Power, and Salsarose, which is the brightest fuschia known to mankind.

4. Clear Mascara or Brow Set of Some Sort: The only thing I inherited from my Italian side of the family is an excessive amount of body hair, including a unibrow. MAC makes a clear brow set and Sephora a clear mascara. I’m sure other brands have similar products. They are all basically the same, except the MAC one is $14 and the Sephora one $10. You can get tinted brow sets, but beware, they will also tint all the fine hairs around your brows.

5. MAC Plush Lash: I’m kind of a mascara snob. I say kind of because I would use a drug store brand, I’m not not sure what one to go with. MAC makes a lot of so so mascaras in my opinion, and Plush Lash is the only one that makes a difference but doesn’t require you to spend 5 minutes wiggling out clumps. My favortite mascara of all time is Perscriptives Lash Envy, but it’s $20, and that amount of money will pay for my gas for the week.

6. MAC Moisturecover Concealer: A medium weight creamy concealer. I need a lot of concealing, especially in the eye area. This one is nice because it doesn’t collect in my fine lines as long as I dust a little powder over it. Also, you can get more coverage by letting it dry and then putting on another light later. I apply my concealer with a fluffy eyeshadow brush to make sure it goes on even and thin.

7. Sephora Retractable Blush Brush: This is so nice…and inexpensive…and it doesn’t get blush all over the inside of your bag because it also has a cap.

8. MAC 182 Buffer Kabuki Brush: Gives you really great coverage with powders. I use it for my mineralized skinfinish, and also when I wear MAC Fix powder as a foundation.

9. MAC Lip Gelee: Now, my ultimate lip product is Aquaphore, but I talk about it enough on this blog as it is. So, for color I will often wear a little lip gelee in Dewy Jube. It’s pretty sheer, has limited stickiness and is fairly moisturizing. Pink is a definite trend in my makeup selections, as you can see.

Products that are on rotation in my bag:

1. Benefit Dandelion Blush: A very pretty light pink, but a color that really only works as a blush if you are quite fair (or at leas that’s what I think). It also conveniently comes with a mini paddle brush.

2. MAC Eye Khol: I perfer the khols because they wash off more easily than waterproof pencils, and in my experience stay on just as long. Although if you want to improve their wear, just pat a little powder over them. My favorite and most often worn colors are Teddy (bronze) and Smolder (black).

3. MAC Brow Shader: As mention above, I am brow obsessed. While I have huge brows, they aren’t particuarly thick, so when I have the time I’ll fill them in. I prefer powder over pencil because I think it looks more natural. You can also use a matte eyeshadow to fill in your brows, but shadows are much more pigmented (so in other words, you’re going to get a lot of color).

So that’s pretty much what I carry around and wear everyday. To be honest, I also carry around tweezers because I am obsessive about my eyebrows. If I know I’m going to be going out later on that evening, or the next day, or whatever, these are some products I might add to the stash:

1. MAC Carbon Eyeshadow: Or really any other black eyeshaodw you have. Adding just a little the outside of your eye will make any look “smoky” and much more dramatic.

2. MAC Vanilla Pigment: A cream color with a gold pearl. Works really well as a highlighter for the eye and cheek.

3. MAC Paint Pot in Otherwordly: When I’m feeling colorful I just wear a paint pot in Otherwordly on my lid and Vanilla Pigment on my brow bone. Otherwordly is a robin’s egg blue, so it’s not most people’s everyday color. For that, my favorite paint pot is Rubenesque, which is a orange-gold, which looks great with a warm brown in the crease. Otherwordly was limited, but you can get the same color as a shadow from the PRO site (Aqua or Sky Blue will work). Just be sure to use a neutral paint underneath so that it stays on all day.

4. MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack: Excellent for a cat eye or winged eyeliner. It’s waterproof so it doesn’t smudge, but it washes off easily with soap and water (which is a major plus for me).

5. A Neutral Lip Gloss of Sorts: If I’m doing a bright or dramatic eye then I go with a neutral colored gloss, if we are talking MAC, then perhaps Ample Pink, Love Nectar, Nice Buzz, or Viva Glam V.

6. MAC Eyeshadow in Woodwinked (or Amber Lights): A perfect crease or lid color for anyone with blue eyes or who wants to bring out gold undertones.

7. MAC Lipstick in Queen’s Sin: This is my all time favorite red, so of course it was a limited edition product. Luckily MAC likes to repeatedly release the same products under different names, so now you can purchase it as Port Red.

I also happen to own 1 Clinique product, and that would be their Breast Cancer shimmer block thing. It was limited edition but they come out with a new one every year, and generally in two different colors. Unfortunately this year their breast cancer campaign revolves around a moisturizer. How boring is that? This is mine, and in addition to being really cute looking in the box, it also looks quite nice on my face.

I am, by the way, lusting after this Cargo blush in Echo Beach…in fact, I think I’m going to have to purchase it tomorrow.

Isn’t it super pretty? It must be mine!
